Sunday Service: Random Notes on college football

Posted by Vince Mullins on September 9, 2007

We Are! Mountaineers? Slow start for Steve Slaton, but he and Pat White must have activated Wonder Twin Powers at halftime…form of a cheetah, shape of an ice sled.

Did you know that Michigan is 0-4 since Bo Schembechler died? Wonder what their record in the four after Lloyd Carr will be…

Oregon spread offense made the Wolverine D look like every other in the Big Ten – easier to bust than Lindsay Lohan. Duck QB Dennis Dixon made the Wolverine fans piss themselves, as did the appearance of Ryan Mallet in place of Chad Henne…the college football world is upside down…and now Mike Hart falls like a sack of bricks. What else can possibly go wrong? Oh yeah, a battle against just as bad Notre Dame next week, which no doubt could tilt the delicate matter/anti-matter balance of the universe. Did you know that history has never seen both teams 0-2?

How quiet were you Buckeye fans after the commanding 3-2 halftime lead over Akron? Probably reverently silent as you prayed for thanks that Michigan struggles like Dennis Kucinich in the presidential campaign.

Temple is so bad Buffalo put 28 on them in the first half. Worst teams in college football are easily Eastern Michigan, Temple, Iowa State and Florida International.

You like offense? Check out the numbers in the SMU 45-31 win over North Texas. Mean Green QB Daniel Meager was anything but with 600 yards and three TDs, but the true standout was WR Casey Fitzgerald with 18 grabs, 327 yards and two TDs.
I think Sam Bradford of Oklahoma will be a top ten QB by the end of the year – 4 more TDs over Miami, and that make Malcom Kelly a top WR as well.

Middle Tennessee just scored again. Kudos to WWL analyst Bill Curry for verbally undressing the Cardinal defense for the poor pursuit and overall horrible play.

Terry Grant is looking awfully good for Bama – the next Sherman Williams?

Boston College defense might be the best fantasy D on the ACC – or anywhere else for that matter. I am sure LSU, TCU and VPI have something to say about that, but BC went undrafted in all my leagues.

Colt Brennan had the quietest 500 yard game ever – granted, I was hosting a luau-themed get together to watch the Hawaii QB on the GamePlan, but Brennan was so efficient the 500 sneaked up on me. Kudos to Vince Dooley’s son Derek, the Louisiana Tech coach, who had the Bulldogs going toe-to-toe with the Warriors right up to the final play.

Gritty gutty performance by the USF Bulls as the charge into Jordan Hare and take out the Auburn Tigers in OT. RB Mike Ford is the current in a solid list of Bull RBs, but this team and the defense in particular could be special. Watch USF and Cincinnati battle for the Big East, not WVU, Loovl, or Rutgers.

LSU should get more #1 votes in the polls after their shellacking of Virginia Tech. I maintain that the Tiger defense is one of the best of all time, not the Trojans.

Finally, the magical ride of the Boise State Broncos is at an end – their visit to Husky Stadium led to a loss, their first in 14 contests. A recent informal poll is that Husky QB Jake Locker is the second most popular man in the state after Bill Gates.
