Bobby Reid QB Controversy, Part Two

Posted by Vince Mullins on September 23, 2007

Keeping you up to date on one of the more interesting quarterback controversies in college football this year – preseason, just about everyone expected Oklahoma State’s Bobby Reid to be a top ten producer, but just one game and one quarter into the season he was benched.

Fast forward past a bad loss to Troy on national TV then the surprise shootout win over Texas Tech at home under the leadership of new QB Zac Robinson, along comes the newspaper/fishwrap the Daily Oklahoman to quote rumor and innuendo (as well as sightings of Momma Reid feeding her son) to look deeper into the reasons behind the switch.

Maybe she is right, maybe she is wrong, but good journalism doesn’t quote rumors because a) it allows too many ways to questions about your credibility, and b) you will never get anyone to whisper information to you again if you present it with that thin of a veil. Shame on you, Jenni Carlson. I don’t buy the argument that college athletes are immune to criticism, but you gotta have facts.

This article then led to what is being known today as “The Rant” by Coach Mike Gundy, youtube link

Word is that the Daily Oklahoman printed an article standing by their journalist today, but the link was not available.

As the husband of a OSU grad I have heard for years that the paper was poor – I found out in August that as far back as 1999 that the Oklahoman was called the worst local newspaper in America - seems that they are holding tight to tradition.

If you are a Bobby Reid fan or you own him on your fantasy team, this whole situation has been awkward because of the paucity of information. Fair to say, whether Carlson was right or wrong, the Zac Robinson age is upon the Cowboys.
