Part two of my BCS National Championship Game preview gets to the heart of the matter: what are Oregon and Auburn are likely to do to each other in the perfect conditions of Cardinal Stadium in Glendale, AZ?

DuckyLearn to Ducky – wings of steel will be needed in the 2011 BCS National Championship (Bleacher Report)

If I had to rank my “spread offense gurus”, the Top 5 in no particular order would be Mike Leach, Dana Holgerson, Tony Franklin, Chip Kelly and Gus Malzahn. I think that is what makes this game such a treat (and also why the inability of Leach to get another head coaching gig astounds me) – we are truly witnessing the pinnacle of offensive football operations. Should be a great show for college football freaks and casual fans alike.

Matchups, links, deconstruction of Vegas sentiment and my pick for Ducky to get his push-ups on more than Mike the Tiger after the jump. (more…)

Long time no talk…hope you have stayed in touch with me over at

Let us jump right in to the picks of the week, where Mick the Piker and I bounce ideas around all week, a mixture of quantitative analysis, pure technical trends, and a healthy dose of “contextual knowledge”. Most of our interesting bets exist outside the Top 25 where Mick’s historical context and my nationwide fantasy monitoring.

In order of confidence, our Top 5 selections:

1) UNC -6.5 over Virginia

Mick’s computer loves UNC by 18!.  Mick can’t see any logical reason to disagree.  Sure, there’s the “UNC is distracted” argument but that didn’t work in week one against LSU so I don’t see any reason to put much stake in that now.  UVA has been DREADFUL at times this season, but I think many still hang that Cavalier feathered hat on the close loss to USC – what does that look like now? based on the company their quarterbacks keep…

Tim Tebow – Florida

Mark Sanchez – formerly of USC

Colt McCoy with wholesome girlfriend – Texas

Matthew Stafford – formerly of Georgia (excellent fitness level, minimal aftermarket parts)

Jimmy Clausen – Notre Dame FAIL

Thanks to Woody and Sean Hill for forwarding, unknown original creator.

too bad about that loss to the Beavers for your BCS Title Game chances, but on the positive side the USC defense will likely filet the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl.

While Southern Cal again takes the top spot in all three of our defensive categories, the North Texas Mean Green were thisclose to being the Bizarro-Trojans by finishing last in all three categories except yards per point. Washington State saved them the embarrassment by asking opponents to cover less than ten yards for each point scored this year.

And this picture – best big hit photo of the day as Notre Dame (#33 ranked unit) defensive back David Bruton (27) makes a special teams tackle on Syracuse punt returner Ryan Howard (21) during the embarrassing loss this past weekend (thanks ICON SMI).

Sherman's Scorched EarthFirst off, best wishes to all of you as you progress through the playoffs in your leagues. I would like to think that Fantasy College Blitz is your General Sherman of college football knowledge leading many in a scorched earth policy through the southern portion of the fantasy college football landscape.

Speaking of Southern references, I am a big proponent of the concept that this time of year is like the annual cotillion after the harvest. Or your own personal homecoming dance. Just don’t overthink your selection of mates, you dance with the girl that has always been by your side. Hence, start your best players regardless of matchup since they got you to this point..

So you know your permastarters (minus the “three strikes and you are out” SMU duo) so our focus this week will be some WR3 type players. TO THE MATCHUPS!

Oklahoma sophomore quarterback Sam Bradford Texas Tech junior QB Graham Harrell

Our Forum on Ning spawned a couple excellent writers/entertainers this season. Most of you know the effervescent “Neil Young” but you should also get to know Topher Dean.

Topher comes through again with some great analysis of the best values at’s College Salary Cap Game. My favorite snippet:

So do you start Bradford or Harrell? Don’t choose. Start them both.

His top ten through week 11 of the H2H season:

Some fantasy leagues have their championship week starting Wednesday, some leagues have already crowned their season winner – regardless we will keep you up to date with the latest defense rankings as we also stare down some amazing games on tap with national title implications.

First off, #1 USC slipped a little bit – they no longer possess the perfect score of #1 rankings in each category of Yards Per Play allowed (YPP), Yards per Point allowed (YPPt) and Points per Game allowed (PPG). Boise State stole the YPPt #1 rank after crushing Idaho.

This week the nation pauses to watch a Big 12 showdown of #43 defense Texas Tech visiting #49 Oklahoma – both teams seem to employ a “bend-but-don’t-break” defense that gives up long plays but shuts down near the end zone.

Ohio State moves back up the charts, now poised at #8 and hosting a moribund “get a life” Michigan Wolverines that sport the 80th ranked defense.

Finally the Holy War of Utah determines the MWC Champ as #21 Defense BYU visits the #11 Utes that allow just 16 ppg.

To the total list – and yes, continue to play whomever you can against Washington State (huskies in the Apple Cup) and North Texas (Going to Middle Tennessee)…
